BABY JESUS

Every year, the play features one newborn baby who plays the double role of the infant child Jesus and his relative, the infant John the Baptist. If you know an expectant mother, we are looking for a baby, male or female, who will be between 3 - 10 weeks old by December 1. The family of baby Jesus receives a free keepsake video of the performance and free tickets for the performance.

REHEARSAL INFORMATION

(Actors in sheep roles need to attend only the final two dress rehearsals, one at our practice venue and one at our performance venue.)

Rehearsals are held once a week in the evenings during the months of October and November. They take place at St. Thomas More Catholic Parish in Edmonton, easily accessible from Terwillegar Drive or the Henday.

ABOUT THE SCRIPT

The script is an adaptation of the New Testament (Revised Standard Version), written locally and dedicated to Pope John Paul II. This adaptation preserves the text in its original form, without abridgment or simplification. This means that the passages which your child memorizes will be true to the gospel narrative. Extra lines have been added in order to develop certain characters, but these additions are inspired by reputable sources (St. Mary of Agreda and St. Catherine Emmerich) and maintain a reverent attitude in keeping with the subject matter.

ABOUT THE PERFORMANCE

The fifteenth annual performance is planned for Sunday, November 28, 2021, at at 2:00 p.m. at the Orange Hub Theatre, located at 10035 - 156 Street, Edmonton, T5P 2P7. I thought the play was wonderful. At first my children were nervous and complained that I put them in, but after the play they agreed it was a great experience . . . I hope the play continues for years to come. I thought it was a beautiful way to begin the Christmas season. The final performance was extraordinary and a great way to share the good news of our Saviour's birth . . . I think it would make a great family tradition to go to the play every year

This was my son’s first time getting involved with drama. He learned about theatre, made a new friend, and had a lot of fun at the practices. It was so worth the time and commitment on our part when my husband and I saw the quality of the production and the talent that the children had to share. It was so well done – I laughed and cried and enjoyed every moment of the play.

– Mom of Owen, age 8

My daughters both loved the practices . . . This play is also exciting because the script is theologically and historically instructive; it was religious education for the kids! We also liked the chance to get to meet other families since we are new to Edmonton . . . I believe this sort of entertainment can help to heal our culture

- Patricia

As "Angel Gabriel’s Mom", I thoroughly enjoyed the experience of watching my child anticipate his role, learn the required lines, and add his own particular nuances to make the part his own. Last year, the two of us were invited by the Duteau family to watch the nativity play and my son was so impressed he said, "Mom, could I be in the play next year?" Both sets of grandparents came to see the performance, and my Mom in particular was very impressed and said, "Could you tell whomever organized this to keep doing this because we just do not see this anymore and it is so important to continue with Catholic cultural tradition and the message of Christmas."

– Lisa (Angel Gabriel’s Mom, 2011)
